Game 46: The Game of General Boulanger
Gaston Lucq. Jeu de l’Oie du Général. Paris: Le Figaro, 30 March 1889. Printed by Imagerie Pellerin, Epinal. Chromolithograph, single sheet folded to 4 sides of 64 x 44 cm.
This splendid supplement was issued by the newspaper Le Figaro in the run-up to the French general election of July 1889. The sheet brings together many of the contemporary popular political images in France between 1881 and 1889. It was executed for Le Figaro by the Imagerie Pellerin, the famous firm of printers and publishers at Epinal, and Gaston Lucq (styling himself Glucq), a well-known Paris designer who, from the late 1880s, had been engaged by Charles Pellerin in a joint operation to produce modern advertising and political images. The Imagerie Pellerin, founded at the end of the 18th century, had enormous success in the mass production of colored images, at first using the pochoir (stencil) method but later, as here, using chromolithography. All of the parties contesting the election are represented: Republicans, monarchists, Bonapartists and (on the page displayed) the Boulangists, who supported ”Le Général,” Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (April 29, 1837 - September 30, 1891). A French general and politician with a strong military record, he was often pictured on his black horse. His popularity among the working classes reached a point in January 1889 when, after a massive victory in the Paris elections for the post of deputy, it seemed that he might lead a coup d'état. But Boulanger procrastinated and lost his opportunity, and his powerful enemies regrouped. His political activities were investigated and the French Government issued a warrant for his arrest. Before it could be executed, Boulanger fled, first to Brussels, then to London. On April 4, 1889, he was stripped of immunity from prosecution and in August the French Senate condemned him and two of his supporters for treason. After Boulanger’s flight, support for him fell away. His party lost the elections and in 1891 Boulanger shot himself on the grave of his beloved mistress, Madame de Bonnemains, in a Brussels cemetery. Below the spirited ”Boulangist Fan” at the top of the sheet is reproduced the Jeu de l’Oie du Général. It is a 63-space game, with the goose spaces depicting the general himself, who is shown at the winning space wearing the imperial crown and dressed in robes of ermine. The hazards refer to incidents in his career. For example, space 2 is July 14 (Bastille Day) and refers to his reintroducing the traditional military parades on that day, during his period of office as minister of war (1886/87). Space 6, the lost “portfolio” - go to space 54 (Commandant du Corps) - refers to his being sacked and sent to Clermont Ferrand by a government fearful of his rising popularity. His departure from the Gare de Lyon (space 12: go to space 44, Gare de Clermont) is duly noted. A mob of 10,000 of his supporters covered the train with posters that declaring: ”He will return!” And indeed, space 44 itself has the instruction to ”Return to 12 (Gare de Lyon).”
